Oh, and while I think of it

Is it "Couldn't" or "Could'nt"?. I saw an ad on a bus today with it spelled the second way and I kept thinking that it was wrong and that they were mangling the spelling for the sake of advertising (the 'nt was crossed out to indicate that you could... eat their jam or something)

I just recall being taught that you put the apostrophe in where there was a missing letter and then merge the two words together, so "Could Not" turned into "Could n't" and then merged into "Couldn't"
