A summary of the last five days.

Chest infection, loads of coughing, doctor says I have virally exascerbated asthma, I take puffers, I get better. Having nothing better to do, I hit level 70 in Warcraft. I probably would have done it sooner but I spent the weekend playing to get a new mount thing. Bow before me nerds, for I am amongst the first to have spent the requisite amount of time sitting on my ass hitting the same monsters over and over and over until mathematics dictated that I had done enough and call it an "Achievement" while I never once displayed any amount of skill. I will revel in the glory now for a month hence when everyone has managed exactly the same thing it will be inconsequential.

I still don't understand your desire to buy a flying mount considering your character can transform into a bird!!!!!!

Situation 1: You are in combat and several adds come in to attack you, death is iminent. You can now run off a cliff and get out of combat range and transform into a bird! How cool is that? You are like Condorman!

Situation 2: You are swimming back from Coilfang reservoir, you break the surface of the water and transform into a bird! How cool is that???

Situation 3: your teammate dies an the middle of hordes of ogres and demons, you fly in and perch on a fence and ressurrect them. How cool is that?

Birdy Vs Mount: 3-0

Oh its *purely* because I like mounts and trinkets and the like, the bird is definitely cooler and more functional but I like the look of the mount, odds are I'll use it maybe a half dozen times but I figure it *might* just save my ass the one time I'm backed against the wall while a patrol I can't handle is coming towards me and I don't even have the mana to transform.
Okay, not *purely* because of looks, there's a certain amount of contingency planning in there.
Now, as for your scenarios, I haven't tested the usability of #1, I tried #2 and couldn't do it, even leaping upwards and hitting the transform button didn't do it but #3 and associated "turning up and looking smug" actions are a definite win :) I particularly like just leaping off a cliff and then flying back up, I don't think I've jumped off anything higher than myself without turning into a bird.

in situation #1, by cliff I mean the edge of the world !!

Yep, I can see how the infinity of the twisting nether could put some distance between you and the enemy alright :) Still, if you're going to die anyway I can see how that plan would have merit anywhere with a decent bit of vertical.
