It has come as quite a surprise to me but after months of trying and getting frustrated with learning the Bass, a few sessions of Guitar Hero 2 with gerrowadat and a lengthy session of it last night while cartographer wasn't around to point and laugh and followthebird wasn't around to be overwhelmed by the sheer manliness of it all have led me to a point where I can manage to negotiate something beyond the very basic fundamentals of the real instrument.
So yeah, Guitar Hero 2 - a primer for the real thing. Also, I rocked out at Monkeywrench on medium difficulty, go me.

I fiddled with a bass for a few months until my eldest son said "Dad, can I have your bass if you're not using it!!"

We got him lessons at Waltons and I was seriously impressed with the quality of the teaching - a mix of playing technique, gigging technique, busking, bass clef etc. He's now got a band together and written their first song - which is actually not bad!

My middle son is a classical percussionist - and he has a drum kit. But the classical stuff doesnt teach you how to play a kit properly, so he's off to Waltons on Monday for lessons with a proper gigging drummer.

One term of lessons would get you seriously along the road!! Id heartily recommend it.
