I think I have my new colouring technique down, it leaves the edges a big jagged but I think I can clear that up easily enough in postwork. Behind the cut is a sample that shows as much skin as I can render in good conscience.

I was going for a comic book look, flatter colours, specular highlights, low overall colour range rather than the very obviously 3D feel that... well that 3D software tends to give you. This is more of a proof of concept than a character concept. It isn't perfect, the process doesn't outline everything I want it to (the lines separating skin and cloth had to be done manually) but postwork on my crappy TRUST tablet is a piece of cake since I'm not trying to do anything too clever or particularly precise.

The whole thing, excluding the character creation and dressing, took about five minutes. Not bad compared to the digital inking and highlighting alternatives.

Some disclaimers apply:
1) The final characters will be more fully clothed, but the large areas of skin show the effect pretty well. I'm not planning some kind of Gen13 fanservice wank mag.
2) Despite the face, I'm not planning on doing anything manga - I just didn't bother my arse applying morphs to the face before rendering, I was more concerned about the material settings than the shape. Furthermore I didn't put much effort into getting the colours on the face quite right, so her lips are skin tone too, this is easily fixed. Actually, ignore everything above the neck.
3) The right boot (her left) is a bit fucked up, I don't know why this happened.

Now all I have to do is persuade this to mesh as seamlessly as I can manage with the 2D backgrounds I'll be drawing. This is all in aid of an idea I've been playing with for the past couple of months but I only had the breakthrough with the look I wanted in the last couple of days. Its for a comic, I'm still working out the kinks in the plot but the working title is "Department B" and is about Professor David Brennan and his adventures fighting crappy cliches from Jason (friday the 13th) to Cthulhu. You know how when you're watching a film and someone says "Why the hell don't they just do X?" - well this is my catharsis where I get to show what I reckon would happen if they did instead of yelling at the telly. I'm not doing the webcomic thing here neither, if I finish a story I'll bind it all up in a .cbr file and stick it somewhere downloadey.

I'll work up the proper character concepts over the next couple of days now that I know theres a point.

The main one really is that there simply isn't the range of backgrounds/sets available for what I want to try and do so I'll be drawing them in pencil, scanning them in and colouring/shading them in photoshop - possibly I'll use 3D models as perspective guides but ultimately it looks like backgrounds will be done by hand. So the default 3D look of the models would clash badly with the obviously 2D backgrounds, hence my attempts to flatten the colours and make them look more 2D and hand drawn. If I could craft every background in 3D then I'd do it but I can't and the story comes first so I don't want to have to limit it to what sets I have available.

That aside, I've never felt comfortable even with having speech bubbles on 3D images, its a personal aesthetic thing.
