There are few experiences less enjoyable than seeing a shadow move across the room out of the corner of your eye and find yourself with the strong feeling that someone is standing right behind you.

Haunted house?
Dial 1800-Ghostbuster and they should set you right.
However, if it turns out to be an escaped mental patient with an axe fetish I'd try 999 first.

Was it a duck?

Throw yourself backwards violently, without hesitation. Quickly! Before they move!

Standing on an upturned 3 pin plug in your bare feet first thing in the morning just as you jumped out of bed. Now THAT'S unpleasant.

Although apparently the single most painful/unpleasant thing in the world is a spinal tap. Where they drain some of your spinal fluid off to test for meningitis... It was described to me as like having someone try to suck your eyeballs out the back of your skull through your brain.

not necessarily. a good friend of mine caught meningitis and was very, very, very sick, with a horrible headache - the spinal tap didn't feel too good, she said, but she really barely noticed, and she swore it felt great - due to the drawing off of excess CSF, relieving the pressure around her brain.
