Honest to God, I'm *this* close to scrapping the whole "I will finish Unholy Wars despite all the setbacks" resolution once and for all. The Word file I'd been using for the past few days to compile all the information so far got corrupted about an hour ago when Word crashed and I can't persuade it to stop crashing now every time I open the file. I've about had enough, its fucking jinxed, I tells ya.

Interesting if true, I've saved that doc quite a few times but not on that PC. The problem is dealt with now thanks to some judicial use of text editors and hopefully my continued use of OpenOffice as well as breaking the thing down to one document per chapter will keep future problems to a minimum. That and mailing it to myself every few hours.

Yep, Word seems to have issues with the number of edits/saves to a document. It gets worse if Track Changes is used. (It also seems to sense the relative importance of the document - but that's crazy talk). Aswell as backups and the like, for really important stuff, I'll occasionally copy everything to a new, fresh document and delete the original.

Oh I don't know, I've never had any problems with the items in the "Crappy old notes" folder - the contents of which are constantly being referred to. On the other hand it frequently craps itself at the contents of the "Final Draft" folder which contains the files I never go near because... well.. they're finished.

At this stage I'm so goddamned paranoid about it that I mail myself anything thats changed at the end of the day, so I essentially have a version control system running on my email, but last night it crapped out after a couple of hours and just before I mailed it. Pain in the hole, but its fixed now. Its just aggravating that I spent an hour yelling at the PC instead of finishing up the section I was rather happy with.

Stick it on a unix box and use strings to get the text out? Try openoffice or some other hippy app?

That was what I was hoping to avoid but it was the only option really. I just copied it, changed it to text and opened it in UltraEdit. Openoffice was having none of it unfortunately.
Annoyingly, it seems to be consistent - every time I try to save changes to the document Word freezes up completely, so I just copied the whole thing to Open Office and I'm using that instead. I don't even know why I was using Word in the first place, everything I've done in the last few months has been in OO.
