A julian date (assuming that's how you actually spell it) is a rather simple concept. It is a way of presenting a date in a format that is only seven characters long and more importantly allows for no confusion about the layout of the date (like DD/MM/YY Vs MM/DD/YY on different sides of the atlantic). How it works is you have the year as the first four characters and the date is converted into a three digit number based on its position in the year. So January first would be 001, February 28th would be 059 and the 31st of December would be 365. So today would be 2004348. Exciting eh? Well not as exciting as the dream last night where I was playing poker with a bunch of blokes called Julian using a rules variant based on that same date system.
