What ever happened to the Atkins diet?

I think it actually got assimilated into general opinions about food, the idea that bread will make you fat but it can be okay to eat meat. My mother's diet seems very odd to me (the lady who spent my childhood telling me that if I'm hungry to fill up on bread now filling her own hunger with steak) but that's the general gist of it.

i think it went the way of Dr Atkins when he fell over and had a stroke.

But your other commenter is correct in that the basic realisation of 'carbs turn to sugar turn to fat' has made it into mainstream nutrition. 'course the whole 'gorge yourself on cow flesh' thing is a bit lethal, too...

Some scientists decried that a high-protein, low-carb diet could lead to heart problems. "Pooh pooh", Mister Atkins said. Then he died of heart failure.

What the others have said.

But the idea that carbs make you fat drives me nuts. Any food eaten in sufficient quantities makes you fat.

Welcome to the wide world of diet fads. Like other fads, Atkins was forgotten about and not to be spoken again.

It's all got to do with the complete inability of famous nutritionists not being able to say that the best way to stay healthy is eat more fruit and veg and less of everthing else
